Courses
Cape Kidnappers
Describing the landscape on the North Island's most spectacular golf course is difficult with words alone; the back nine features holes that are laid out across fingers of land that are demarcated by cavernous gorges and gullies. The architect, Tom Doak, also responsible for the Pacific Dunes course at Bandon Dunes, has carefully manipulated this remarkable terrain to produce a once-in-a-lifetime challenge. Doak is a highly individualistic creator; his courses do not reflect the time-honoured traditions of golf design.
Rather, Doak places the utmost emphasis on using the inherent character of the land presented to him. It is for this reason that the decision makers at Cape Kidnappers rightly called upon him to formulate a course that merited the location, and he has certainly succeeded in completing a course that will soon be renowned the world over.
Cape Kidnappers has already shown its tournament credentials in hosting the Kiwi Challenge in October 2008. The event, which was won in a playoff by Hunter Mahan who defeated Ryder Cup hero Anthony Kim, adds yet further kudos to one of the world's most spectacular golf courses.
Kauri Cliffs
Kauri Cliffs was designed and built by David Harman of Golf Course Consultants, Orlando, Florida. The par 72 championship golf course measures 7,139 yards / 6,528 metres and offers five sets of tees to challenge every skill level. Fifteen holes view the Pacific Ocean, six of which are played alongside cliffs which plunge to the sea. The beautiful inland holes wind through marsh, forest and farmland. Kauri Cliffs is currently ranked #37 in the world by Golf Digest Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses in the World.
Jacks Point
New Zealand’s most spectacular course?
The Jacks Point golf course is bounded by the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu. It traverses through wetland to the lake edge encountering steep bluffs, indigenous vegetation and wildlife. It is designed to work with nature, not against it. Fairways are designed with minimal excavation and careful plantings to complement the natural environment, but also to give the golfer a fighting chance.
Jack’s Point has 4 tee positions to be enjoyed by golfers of all levels, and plays long off the back tees at over 7,200 yards. Fairways are generous in places but strategic narrow sections make it a placement golf course. Get too aggressive and you can be made to suffer! For those lucky enough to have played the course, you’ll discover that course knowledge is useful for a good score.
And for thrills, a Par 3 golf tee on Cecil Peak, 4,500m above Queenstown and accessed by helicopter.
