Troia is designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr and is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty an hour south of Lisbon.
The course is an unusual mixture of links and parkland, with rows of magnificent pine trees bordered by sand. Rough areas of wild plants are also off the fairway - needless to say, your ball needs to be on the fairway or you'll be playing from the wild dune areas. Water rarely comes into play, but the bunkers and the trouble off the fairway will keep your mind on the course and away from the views out to sea and across to the mountains. There are many stunning golf holes here.
The easiest way to reach here from the north (Sesimbra / Lisbon) is by the regular short ferry and catamaran services from Setubal which leave a short 5 minute journey at the other end. This really is a most enjoyable day out with a lovely modern clubhouse and friendly welcome. It does feel like you are miles from any civilization (because you are!). If you can be bothered to seek out Troia, you will be rewarded with a Golf World Top 20 in Europe course and a member of European Tour Destinations, a network of world class golf venues. If you move this course to the Algarve, you would be looking at a green fee of €160+.
